The Apparition of Our Lady to Saint Bonet (7th Century)

On March 29, the Catholic Church commemorates the apparition of Our Lady to Saint Bonet, also known as Saint Bonitus, the Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne. This remarkable event reflects Saint Bonet’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the profound spiritual experiences of the early saints.

The Vision in the Church

According to tradition, Saint Bonet remained in his church one evening for prayer. While deep in contemplation, he was startled by the sound of heavenly voices. Angels entered the church, their radiant presence illuminating the space. Behind them followed a procession of saints, and at the center of it all was the Blessed Virgin Mary, seated on a magnificent throne carried by the seraphim.

When the procession reached the main altar, the heavenly voices ceased. Some saints turned to the Blessed Virgin, asking who should celebrate the Mass. Our Lady then addressed Saint Bonet directly, saying:

“Here is Bonitus, my faithful servant and excellent bishop. He is worthy of fulfilling this holy function.”

Though overwhelmed, Saint Bonet was gently lifted to his feet by the saints. They escorted him to the altar, where angels clothed him in a chasuble of exquisite design brought by the Blessed Virgin herself. With reverence and humility, Saint Bonet celebrated the Mass, assisted by the angels and saints.

The Legacy of the Chasuble

After the Mass concluded, Our Lady and the heavenly host departed, leaving Saint Bonet alone once more. The miraculous chasuble remained, a testament to the divine encounter. This sacred vestment was preserved with great care at Clermont for centuries. Unfortunately, during the French Revolution in 1793, it was destroyed along with many other sacred relics.

Saint Bonet's Later Life

Two years after the apparition, Saint Bonet chose to step down from his role as bishop. He retired to the Abbey of Manlieu, where he lived a humble and prayerful life until his death in 710.

Saint Bonet’s vision serves as a powerful reminder of the Blessed Virgin's presence and the sanctity of the Eucharistic celebration. His unwavering faith and devotion continue to inspire the faithful, making his story a cherished part of Catholic tradition.
